FAUNA
The fauna of the
Supramonte of Urzulei:
a wild treasure to be discovered

The mountains surrounding Urzulei, in the heart of Ogliastra, preserve one of Sardinia's wildest and most authentic environments. Here, among deep gorges, karst plateaus, and holm oak forests, a rich and precious fauna lives, adapted to a rugged yet extraordinarily biodiverse landscape.

Golden eagle and birds of prey:
the lords of the sky
One of the most thrilling encounters for hikers and nature lovers is with the golden eagle, the undisputed queen of the Supramonte peaks. With its majestic wingspan, it dominates the clear skies of the area, often spotted circling above the Gorropu Gorge or the rocky ridges. Alongside it, you can observe peregrine falcons, buzzards, and kestrels, swift and silent birds of prey that complete the picture of a still intact ecosystem.
Mouflons and wild boars:
discreet forest dwellers
The Sardinian mouflon, a symbol of the island's wildlife, lives in the woods and on the plateaus. Agile and shy, it moves elegantly across rocks and slopes, difficult to spot but unmistakable for its proud silhouette. Equally widespread is the wild boar, a nocturnal protagonist of the trails and clearings, important for the area's ecological balance.

Small mammals
and elusive predators
The Supramonte is also home to more elusive species such as the Sardinian dormouse, the Sardinian fox, the hedgehog, the marten, and, in the most remote areas, the rare and protected wildcat. These animals play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and are a testament to the health of Urzulei's natural environment.
Endemic birds
and sounds of the forest
Those who hike the mountain trails are accompanied by the songs of numerous endemic and migratory birds: wrens, robins, hoopoes, bee-eaters, and nuthatches. In spring and summer, the forest fills with sounds and colors, making every walk a unique sensory experience.
